AirSpace Studio Show - featured artist #8 - David Bethell

Former AirSpace director David Bethell is showing an installation and video piece arising from work made earlier in the year - the result of a marathon 24 hour outdoor performance at the Garden Festival site in Stoke-on-Trent.

Stacked Against All Odds

The viewer sees a man working at an office desk during the normal working day.  He becomes distracted and restless wanting to break away to another location and new possibilities.  He takes the opportunity to explore his desires when his working shift is over. The man attempts to escape using only the materials that he has at his disposal, in doing so he manages to create a Lighthouse and a Boat. The work looks at blurring the boundaries between man, nature, and the modern working environment. The work responds both to the site’s history and presents us with a contrast and conflict between retail and office environments against the landscape.
