Emma Starkey, Attempting Omega |
In association and partnership with New Art West Midlands, we're happy to announce that Emma Starkey, one of the main prizewinners this year, will be resident at AirSpace in July and August for two weeks.
Emma, from Birmingham, is a recent graduate of Worcester University, who works with performance and film to investigate expressions of identity. In its approach to repetitive actions, the endurance of the body and the urge to test its limitations, her work has its roots in the performances of artists such as Ron Athey and Marina Abramović.
I want to find out why I want to use a particular object/material, and how does it already relate in the world? And can the idea of use be altered to provide an alternative reality? And if so, what? The work depends upon back and fourth exchanges with material and theory. The performativity in both drawing and performance work are often repetitive, ritualistic and ceremonial. - Emma Starkey
Emma will be available at specific times during the residency to talk about her work and approach - full details, including dates, of the residency are to follow.
